This is a 9 ECTS project course in which students (alone or in small groups) work on projects related to research in the Multi-Robot Systems group. If you are interested, please reach out to hoenig@tu-berlin.de directly as mentoring capacity is very limited this term.

• In this project course, groups of three students each are assigned project topics based on current research questions in computer vision and possibly related research areas. Participants are expected to be experienced in Python programming, ideally using the PyTorch framework; fluent in English, both spoken and written; following the standard guidelines of good scientific practices; and to have prior (hands-on) knowledge in deep learning for computer vision.

About SatCom and Radio Astronomy

The Satellite Communication Project (formerly also called Projekt Amateurfunk) is a cooperation between the Chairs of High-Frequency-Technology and Space Technology at TU Berlin. Students from the international Master of Space Engineering and german bachelor degree programs, primarily Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, cooperate in realizing one or multiple projects in the field of satellite communication. Each group or sub-team develops its part of the overall project and will be supported by experienced advisors.

The basic knowledge needed to approach the project will be taught in a few lectures at the beginning of the course. In addition to this, students are required to extend their knowledge independently according to their assigned work package throughout the semester. The groups record their work in form of technical documents, a project report and present their results together in a final presentation.

This semester the Satellite Communication Project will be held in parallel with the entirely new Radio Astronomy Project. Due to the common structure and some common events both projects share this ISIS course.

Disclaimers

• We are open to all interested and motivated students, however due to the character of an interdisciplinary project and the limited teaching capacity we cannot guarantee participation for all students in case of higher than usual demand. Usually we do not reject students, but should this be required MSE, EE and CE students will be prioritized according to the rules of TU Berlin.
• Its not a lecture to teach you everything about Amateur Radio (you're probably looking for the AfuTUB-Kurs in this case), satellite communications or radio astronomy and is focused on autonomous work guided by student-assistants. We'll give you a coarse framework to follow but you have to take the initiative yourself together with your interdisciplinary team.
• Please be aware that due to the hands-on and teamwork nature of this course, hybrid/online participation is not possible.
• For German students we recommend starting your SatCom/RA journey with our Amateur Radio course during the winter semester. Afterwards, this project is a perfect add-on for your summer semester. However participation is possible without this.
• Teaching and working language is English.
• There will be a number of different work packages per semester including electrical, computer, radio-frequency and mechanical engineering as well as project management. You should have sound knowledge of at least one of those topics to contribute to your team's work.
• Playing with tech is fun, documentation is pain. You're supposed to have both: the fun part and the pain part. Be aware of that.

In this module already known topics from the module “5th Generations Mobile Networks” are applied in practice. With a view to the 5G evolution towards 6G and emerging technologies, selected topics in the context of 5G and 6G such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networks (SDN), Edge Computing, Network Slicing, Backhaul Communication, Data Exchange, Data-oriented Network Optimization, Intent-based Management, Zero Touch, Network Performance Management, Requirement-based Network Customization, Network Automation using ML/AI algorithms, 5G Campus Networks and Nomadic Private Networks are treated in detail.

Graduates of this module are endued with competences in the following areas: services, protocols, and elements of infrastructures within classical wired and mobile telecommunication networks, Software-based networks, 5G mobile networks or mobile networks of the emerging sixth generation (6G). Furthermore, they can apply this knowledge in practice and work on development tasks in small groups, document the procedures and present the results. They can independently conduct the necessary literature research and develop own concepts.

The course intends to introduce students to the experimental method in economics. The participants first learn how to conduct an experiment and are introduced to the literature in experimental and behavioral economics. Based on this literature, students identify a research question and design an experiment that addresses the research question in the most effective way. They write a term paper on this experiment which can be conducted as a small pilot study.

Recent advances in satellite technology have led to a regular, frequent, and high-resolution monitoring of Earth at the global scale, providing an unprecedented amount of Earth observation (EO) data. To efficiently process and analyze large amounts of EO data, remote sensing has evolved into a multidisciplinary field, where machine learning and computer vision algorithms play an important role nowadays. At the start of this project course, students receive project topics as well as some information material on Deep Learning for Earth Observation. After setting the project teams and topics, a project environment is decided (with the suitable tools for teamwork) with the assistance of the lecturer. Then, project planning, coordination and development start. During the weekly project meetings, each project team presents and discusses their progress as well as the next steps with the lecturer. The project is concluded with final reports as well as a final presentation. The general topics are related to the Chair’s current research activities and include, but are not limited to: i) image representation learning; ii) classification and retrieval of satellite images; iii) multimodal learning; iv) development of foundation models for vision and language.

In this project-based seminar, we focus on sustainability challenges, i.e., sustainable transformation & innovation, circular economy, and/or decarbonization. Student teams analyze potentials regarding the business model of Startups and sound out business opportunities regarding a (potential) customer or a market segment, assessing promising areas for action. Student teams will also provide recommendations to position a Startup and/ or the offering with sustainability demands. This module is instructed by our Campana & Schott Partners.

Welcome to the course page for the Bachelor/Master modules (Advanced) Blockchain Prototyping (ISE), (Advanced) Cloud Prototyping, (Advanced) Distributed Systems Prototyping (3S), and (Advanced) Information Systems Prototyping (IKM)!

In these courses, students have hands-on experience with all aspects of software project work (including team-based software development, project management, collaborative decision making, documenting and communicating project results) in the area of distributed systems. They are able to solve real-world problems in the context of the design, implementation, and evaluation of cloud-, fog-, blockchain-, and/or web-based application systems in, e.g., enterprise, start-up, and IoT contexts.

Small groups of students analyze and solve challenging software and prototyping problems. They explore and use public cloud services, e.g., Amazon Web Services, and modern software (Web, blockchain, mobile, and other) technology stacks as applicable to the specific project focus defined in each term. The student teams work independently and are supervised by participating research groups. Hands-on experimentation with cloud services and open source systems is expected. Concrete tasks and project objectives as regards themes and technology stacks will be communicated at the beginning of the term. Some projects may be in cooperation with external partners.
