In this seminar, students will learn how to: (a) critically read and interpret scientific papers drawn from literature on responsible data management and responsible data science, (b) give a scientific presentation that is technically precise, concentrated on the relevant topics, and also enjoyable; (c) write a scientific analysis of an existing paper based on various sources, such as contemporary computer science journals and conference proceedings. In addition, students will learn about state-of-the art and current research topics in responsible data science and data management.

Students acquire the fundamental background on Statistical Inference, including hypothesis testing, signal detection, parameter estimation, and optimal MMSE linear filtering (in particular, Wiener and Kalman filters). This is one of the foundations of modern Electrical Engineering in the ``Systems’ areas such as Automatic Controls, Communications, and Signal Processing.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the students will have acquired a deep knowledge of the fundamental concepts of information theory and will be able to apply such concepts to advanced applications in multiuser communication networks, channel coding, and source coding. The students will be able to analyze simple information theoretic problems by computing the entropy of a discrete source, the rate-distortion function for a continuous source with a given fidelity criterion, and the channel capacity of memoryless discrete and continuous channels. Through the lecture and the exercises, the students will apply the learned fundamental concepts to advanced problems, with applications to source coding and channel coding in a multiuser/network scenario, and will be able to implement in software and verify by computer simulation state of the art algorithms in source coding and channel coding.

„Religion and Spirituality are among the most language dependent of human activities” 
(Bouma/Aarons 2004: 351).

Ob ein gerechter Gott, eine heilsbringende Ideologie oder ein Glück versprechendes Coaching: Viele Menschen sehnen sich danach, ihr Leben nach etwas Höherem auszurichten und so das immanente Dasein durch eine transzendente Orientierung zu umhüllen und aufzuwerten. Teils laufen diese Sinnkonstruktionen unbewusst ab oder treten unbemerkt in Erscheinung; teils finden wir explizite Aushandlungsprozesse, zu denen wir bewusst Stellung beziehen. Doch stets ist es Sprache, die uns erlaubt, überweltliche Bezüge herzustellen. Mit Wörtern machen wir diffuse Ideen und Gefühle greifbar; mit ihnen entwickeln, verhandeln und verbreiten wir abstrakte Konzepte wie Vorstellungen von Jenseits und Göttlichkeit, von Tod und Lebenssinn, von Gemeinschaft und Glück. Sprachgebrauch mit transzendenten Bezügen ist in allen Zeiten und Kulturen verankert und begegnet uns auch in rein säkularen Situationen.

In diesem Seminar werden wir uns auf den Forschungsstand zu Sprache und Religion (u.a. Lasch/Liebert 2025) bzw. zu Religious Language (u.a. Richardson et al., 2021) aufbauend mit der Verbalisierung transzendenter Konzepte in drei Diskusräumen auseinandersetzen. Um Gebrauch und Ritualisierung sakraler und religiöser Sprache kennenzulernen, betrachten wir zunächst institutionalisierte Glaubensgemeinschaften. Darauf aufbauend wenden wir uns spirituellen Freizeitangeboten in verschiedenen medialen Formen zu und analysieren den Sprachgebrauch selbsternannter Hexen auf TikTok, in Yogakursen o.ä. Abschließend befassen wir uns mit religiöser Sprache in politischen Kontexten, die dort häufig zur Auf- und Abwertung sowie Gruppenkohäsion und Persuasion eingesetzt wird.

Den drei Themenbereichen werden wir uns mit theoretischen Überlegungen, empirischen Studien und offenen Datensitzungen widmen. Letztere werden im Rahmen einer kleinen Leistung von den Teilnehmer*innen vorbereitet und protokolliert, für eine große Leistung sind zum Ende des Semesters Hausarbeiten einzureichen.

Learning Outcomes
In this seminar, students will be introduced to advanced topics in data management, database systems, or technologies and systems for big data management and data science. Students will learn about the core elements of a technical presentation. They will also learn how to properly present a scientific topic drawn from the database and information systems literature. Moreover, students will have an opportunity to sharpen their critical thinking skills.

Content
During the initial weeks, students will be offered lectures on the core elements of a technical presentation and how to give a good presentation. In addition, each of the seminar participants will be assigned a scientific topic as well as reading materials (e.g., drawn from a textbook on advanced data management, database systems, or data science technologies and systems). In the subsequent weeks, each student will read their assigned reading materials and study them deeply, in order to assemble and deliver their own presentation. Moreover, each week, students will be required to reflect on the main challenges addressed in each of their peers' presentations. (Details will be announced in the class.)

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods
This seminar is an introduction to advanced topics. In the initial lectures, we will motivate scientific topics and offer advice on how to create and deliver a good scientific presentation. In the subsequent weeks, one student will offer a detailed presentation on their previously assigned topic, and the rest of the seminar participants will briefly discuss a specific aspect of the topic. In the final week, a quiz will be given. The scope of the quiz will span the content covered over the course of the seminar.

Requirements for Participation and Examination
Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:
Prerequisites include the following: (a) knowledge in relational database management systems (e.g., as acquired upon completing the TU Berlin ISDA course or its equivalent), (b) practical experience in database programming (e.g., as acquired upon completing the TU Berlin DBPRA course or its equivalent, (c) solid background in mathematics, and (d) basic computer science knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

This course enables students to define, shape, and solve a research problem drawn from the area of data management systems using scientific and technical methods within a fixed period of time. The module conveys: (a) technical competence 10%, (b) methodological competence 40%, (c) system competence 30%, and (d) social competence 20%.

Content

The course covers a presentation on open thesis topics at DIMA, as well as a presentation and discussion on the expectations and evaluation criteria of Bachelor's Theses, topic selection, structuring and writing a thesis proposal, including problem statement, solution approach, experimental design, evaluation, and implementation plan as well as project and time management over the course of a Bachelor's Thesis. Upon completion of their thesis, students will offer a presentation of their work (goal and research problem, solution methodology, evaluation and findings) and lessons learned with respect to the preparation and execution of their Bachelor's Thesis for the discussion with their peers. Additionally, participating students will attend scheduled presentations and benefit both from the peers' comments on their work and from the discussion of the work of fellow students.

Inhalte im SoSe:
In Vorlesungen und Laborpraktika an Forschungsapparaturen sollen die experimentellen und theoretischen Grundlagen der Festkörperphysik vertieft und der Bezug zu Anwendungen in Materialwissenschaften, Elektronik, Photonik und Quantentechnologien erarbeitet werden. Die Vorlesung im Sommersemester gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in die folgenden Kapitel: Dielektrische Eigenschaften, Festkörperoberflächen und Grenzflächen (Grundlagen und Anwendungen), elektrische und optische Eigenschaften von Halbleitern, Halbleiterbauelemente, Magnetismus und Supraleitung. Die Wechselwirkungen verschiedener Teilchen und Quasiteilchen (Elektronen, Phononen, Photonen, Exzitonen, Polaritonen, Magnonen, Plasmonen) werden diskutiert.

Vorlesungsbegleitend finden Übungen statt, bei denen die Studierenden in kleinen Gruppen experimentelle Methoden kennen lernen, diese in Form eines Vortrags den anderen Übungsteilnehmern vermitteln und anschließen im Labor demonstrieren sollen.

In diesem Kurs lernen Sie MATLAB von Grund auf kennen ‒ auch ohne Programmiererfahrung. Sie entwickeln Schritt für Schritt ein Verständnis für Rechner, Programmierlogik und numerische Werkzeuge und wenden alles direkt auf ingenieurnahe Beispiele, Daten und Visualisierungen an.
