This lecture introduces the fundamental principles and applications of quantum sensing based on solid-state defect qubits, with a focus on systems such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. It covers the quantum mechanical description of spin states, optical initialization and readout, and the interaction of defect spins with external fields. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding coherence, decoherence mechanisms, and their impact on sensing performance.
The module follows a project-based, hands-on learning approach that combines theoretical lectures with practical applications. Students will first build core knowledge and then apply it in a small research-oriented project, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking. In addition to fundamental concepts, the course introduces first-principles computational approaches (e.g., density functional theory) for modeling quantum materials and their properties. The grading is performed based on the presentation of their projects and the oral exam.

Was passiert in der ersten Phase (Theorieteil) des Seminars?

In der ersten Phase des Seminars werden die Teilnehmenden in das Konzept Soundscape eingeführt, erhalten Grundlagen des städtebaulichen Lärmschutzes und der Lärmkartierung, lernen Ansätze der Verkehrsplanung sowie der Stadt- und Regionalplanung kennen und werden mit Instrumenten und Maßnahmen zur Lärmbekämpfung und akustischen Stadtraumgestaltung vertraut gemacht. Des Weiteren werden Methoden zur Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung und verschiedene Partizipationsformen, wie z.B. Citizen Science, vorgestellt, auch durch Vorträge externer Referenten.

Was passiert in der zweiten Phase (Praxisteil) des Seminars? 

In der zweiten Phase des Seminars arbeiten die Teilnehmer in Gruppen an der Anwendung theoretischer Inhalte in ausgewählten Modellprojekten. Sie setzen sich exemplarisch mit der Bürgerbeteiligung zur Erfassung örtlicher Belange auseinander, erstellen Lärmkarten (Prognose) zur Vergleich von alternativen Konzepten und erarbeiten Lösungen zur Reduzierung/Vermeidung von Lärmkonflikten unter Berücksichtigung weiterer Ziele nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklung. Die Planungsergebnisse für die Modellprojekte werden abschließend präsentiert.

Was sind die Lernziele des Seminars?

Studierende werden angeleitet, ein Verständnis der Auswirkungen von Schall auf den Menschen und seine Umwelt zu entwickeln sowie die Kenntnis und Interpretation geltender Regelwerke im Bereich des Lärmschutzes zu erlangen. Sie werden sich in Teams damit beschäftigen Methoden aus Physik, Ingenieurwissenschaften und Psychologie zu verbinden und interdisziplinäre Lösungsansätze umzusetzen. Den Teilnehmenden werden Methoden vermittelt, die sie befähigen, Befragungen und Soundwalks vor Ort durchzuführen und erworbene Kenntnisse zur Lösung realer Lärmkonflikte anzuwenden - mit einem besonderen Fokus auf die Umsetzung nachhaltiger Stadtplanung unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener städtebaulicher Anforderungen.

The EARS project is an interdisciplinary project seminar that deals with the topic of urban sound in all its facets.

What happens in the first phase (theoretical part) of the seminar?

In the first phase of the seminar, participants are introduced to the soundscape concept, learn the basics of urban noise protection and noise mapping, become familiar with approaches to traffic planning and urban and regional planning and are introduced to instruments and measures for noise abatement and acoustic urban design. Furthermore, methods for public participation and various forms of participation, such as citizen science, are introduced, also through presentations by external speakers.

What happens in the second phase (practical part) of the seminar? 

In the second phase of the seminar, participants work in groups on the application of theoretical content in selected model projects. They will deal with examples of public participation to record local concerns, create noise maps (forecasts) to compare alternative concepts and develop solutions to reduce/avoid noise conflicts, taking into account other objectives of sustainable urban development. The planning results for the model projects are then presented.

What are the learning objectives of the seminar?

Participants are taught methods that enable them to carry out surveys and soundwalks on site and to apply the knowledge they have acquired to solve real noise conflicts - with a particular focus on the implementation of sustainable urban planning, taking into account various urban planning requirements.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion, participants will have a solid understanding of basic Python programming, data gathering and cleaning, visualization, regression analysis, and the ability to create dynamic web applications and dashboards. This course aims to equip engineers with the tools needed for proficient data analysis and the development of machine learning models, preparing them for advanced studies.

Conducting research in the areas of data engineering, data management, and machine learning systems requires the ability to deal with scientific literature in these areas as well as to design, implement, and evaluate prototypes. To facilitate these skills, the DAMS Lab group (FG Big Data Engineering) at TU Berlin offers a seminar and a programming project on Large-scale Data Engineering as a combined module (12 ECTS), which can be taken by bachelor and master students. Taking both seminar and project is the ideal preparation for a bachelor/master thesis with our group. Alternatively, only bachelor students may take the seminar as a separate module (3 ECTS) and the project as a separate module (9 ECTS).

This module introduces into advanced topics in wireless communication systems, preparing students to contribute to research projects e.g. during their master thesis in related fields. The module provides a bottom-up introduction into multiple-ipnpu multiple-output (MIMO) techniques and adaptive transmission concepts for multiple users in mobile networks. The focus is on the physical and medium access layers, and the support needed from the network layer.

Semiconductor microchips have become a key node in the contemporary AI-driven global economy and are increasingly understood as critical national infrastructure and a major source of geopolitical tension. This seminar investigates the production of this crucial piece of technology. Initially, we will study the historical development of semiconductor chip production from the mid of the 20^th century to the present. The seminar continues to examine the global value chains, production geographies, environmental implications and geopolitical entanglements of this key technology of digital capitalism.

In light of the global competition over AI and the geopolitical tensions, in particular between the US and China, the German government has begun to heavily subsidise the construction of new semiconductor factories and the expansion of existing facilities in Dresden, Germany. This semiconductor cluster will serve as a case study to understand the new dynamics of semiconductor production and the manifold implications such a geopolitically-driven project has in the concrete urban fabric of Northern Dresden.

The seminar will include small research projects and presentations by students and potentially an excursion to Dresden.

Additionally, each session will be concluded with a reflection session, where you can share your perspective on what happened during the workshop. Because manipulation isn’t black and white, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the nuances and complexities of each scenario, helping you gain a deeper understanding of how to handle these situations in real life.

We’ll also bring in guest speakers from media, journalism, and academia to give you a broad perspective on the topic. They’ll introduce you to the latest research and real-world applications, helping you connect theory with practice, right here in an academic setting.

This project addresses a critical gap in the standard curriculum by offering an in-depth exploration of social engineering, focusing on manipulation and persuasion techniques. The workshops will touch upon different dimensions where manipulation is present in our lives: marketing and media studies, psychology, ethics, interpersonal interactions, and AI-powered technologies. Participants will gain critical tools to recognize, respond to, and reflect on the diverse dimensions of manipulation, and archives skills that are increasingly essential in a media-saturated, digitally connected society. By combining theoretical insights with experiential learning practices, the project equips students to analyze and navigate manipulative tactics in real-world scenarios.

This module offers students an introduction to methods for effectively coordinating inter- and transdisciplinary teamwork, including input and practical exercises on basic communication strategies, moderation skills, and project management. A particular focus of the course will be on the identification and reflection of different roles in interdisciplinary teams. Based on seminar-style input sessions on available methods for structuring efforts at effectively communicating (e.g., pyramid principle), moderating (e.g., systemic questioning), and managing team processes (e.g., Scrum), students will have the opportunity to apply these methods. An important part of these practical exercises will be to explore, discuss, and reflect the pros and cons of each method in collegial case conferences.

EMNET as purpose-driven project
The project aims to empower and support female students at the AAU in logistics to obtain higher qualifications, shape their careers to enter the job market. Additionally, we aim to help close the current research gap on the implementation of the circular economy in logistics in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Ethiopia. For this, we will realize in the Winter Semester 25/26 with the Co-Working Seminar.

The seminar
In the co-working seminar, eight students from TU Berlin will work together with 8 students from Addis Ababa University in groups on aspects of Ethiopia's circular economy: Three case studies, in a intercultural group work. Both locations, Berlin and Addis Ababa, will be visited for 1 week each.

In accordance with GKWI, the course can only be credited toward the Industrial Engineering (M.Sc) degree program in the integration module, and in Sustainable Management in the elective module Focus on Ecology and Technology.

Course Description

This course introduces students to the sociological study of visual culture, images, and visual methods. We examine how images produce, stabilize, and contest social meanings; how power operates visually; and how sociologists can analyze and produce visual data. Students will learn basic tools of visual analysis and reflect on ethical issues in visual research.

Reading Course: Latour, Reassembling the Social. An Introduction to Actor-Network-Theory

Course Description: Bruno Latour describes what his book “Reassembling the Social” is about as follows: “The argument of this book can be stated very simply: when social scientists add the adjective ‘social’ to some phenomenon, they designate a stabilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that, later, may be mobilized to account for some other phenomenon. There is nothing wrong with this use of the word as long as it designates what is already assembled together, without making any superfluous assumption about the nature of what is assembled. Problems arise, however, when ‘social’ begins to mean a type of material […] What I want to do in the present work is to show why the social cannot be construed as a kind of material or domain and to dispute the project of providing a ‘social explanation’ of some other state of affairs. […] What I want to do is to redefine the notion of social by going back to its original meaning and making it able to trace connections again. Then it will be possible to resume the traditional goal of the social sciences but with tools better adjusted to the task.” (Latour, 2005: 1–2) The goal of the seminar is to study this book through close reading and discussion of its contents.

Open Types, Open Morphologies: re-imagining Berlin with its unbuilt pasts

This course explores alternative pasts of Berlin through unbuilt architecture/urban competition entries, analogous to Roma Interrotta, it produces visionary future images of Berlin on its unbuilt past.

The research primarily is threefold: first, the typo-morphological analysis of the Berliner unbuilt projects since 1990s, and their variations, not only for their formal aspects but also their cultural, social and political roles; second, the analysis of specific selected typologies and modes of transformations, investigating the methods and tools/elements of transformation such as the relation with the ground, sky, edges, and program; and third, the investigation of a broader view of Berlin’s contemporary culture of civic spaces via reimagining the future with the past images, in between private and public, individual and collective, and exterior/void and interior/solid. 

On the pedagogical front, the course consists of three main steps: introductory lectures/seminars, case study selection/study and fieldwork/site visits, and analysis and representation phase (postcards from alternative pasts), with an expected outcome of a collective catalogue of Berlin’s unbuilt future, still alive within today’s fixed reality.

By various accounts, the city of Berlin is widely regarded as one of the queer capitals of the world. Numerous maps produced by the City of Berlin, as well as by publications such as Siegessäule magazine, reinforce this claim through curated “queer maps” that mark milestone locations, neighborhoods, and nightlife venues. These spatial representations of queer cultural spheres are largely oriented toward the tourism industry and function as a form of urban branding that caters to market demands. As such, they can be understood as a representational mode that often carries ambiguous political meanings for queerness, serving neoliberal regimes of spatial production and reinforcing forms of homonormativity [1]

On the other hand, emerging queer architectural theory often approaches mapping through the queer subject as atlas, historical reconstruction, or archival practice in order to trace spaces that have disappeared due to precariousness within extractive urban systems or that have been co-opted by regimes of commercialization.[2] In this sense, queer maps can be understood as serving both functions: navigating the city through its historical layers while also engaging with contemporary spatial politics.

At the same time, queerness can also be understood through the tensions described by Samuel Clowes Huneke between the “neoliberal queers” of the present and the radical queer movements of the past[3]. These positions often exist in conflict and contradiction rather than within a single coherent queer map. Such fractures can already be observed in Berlin itself: in the existence of two pride parades, in the contrasts between different lesbian and gay housing projects, or in the spatial tensions between queer cultural centers and anti-queer peripheries.

This seminar is interested in addressing the complexities of queer representation in a more conflictual and intersectional manner. Its aim is to investigate how urban domains such as housing, leisure, labor, public space, nature, culture, and infrastructures of care might be imagined as queer counterparts to normative spatial orders, and what spatial and systemic forces enable or constrain these processes.

In this sense, the seminar does not aim to produce yet another “Queer Map of Berlin.” Rather, through overlapping and sometimes contradictory spatial narratives, it seeks to explore what Huneke describes as a pragmatic position—one in which radical and neoliberal forms of queerness coexist as equally visible yet contested elements of the urban landscape

This advanced course focuses on the system and data management challenges in managing and serving machine learning (ML) models. The course starts by recapping standard ML pipelines up to the training stage. The lifecycle of an ML model extends far beyond training. Students will be introduced to foundational frameworks for model management, where trained models are treated as core data artifacts. The course covers data management techniques and optimizations, including model selection, versioning, lineage tracking, and metadata management. Building on this, students will explore the architectures of modern model serving systems, along with performance optimizations such as dynamic batching, model compilation, and resource-efficient inference execution. Furthermore, students will be exposed to state-of-the-art research on inference and model management. Through a combination of seminal research papers and hands-on projects, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire model lifecycle beyond training, preparing them for both academic research and real-world system design.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the students will have acquired a deep knowledge of the fundamental concepts of information theory and will be able to apply such concepts to advanced applications in multiuser communication networks, channel coding, and source coding. The students will be able to analyze simple information theoretic problems by computing the entropy of a discrete source, the rate-distortion function for a continuous source with a given fidelity criterion, and the channel capacity of memoryless discrete and continuous channels. Through the lecture and the exercises, the students will apply the learned fundamental concepts to advanced problems, with applications to source coding and channel coding in a multiuser/network scenario, and will be able to implement in software and verify by computer simulation state of the art algorithms in source coding and channel coding.

Learning Outcomes

This course enables students to define, shape, and solve a research problem drawn from the area of data management systems using scientific and technical methods within a fixed period of time. The module conveys: (a) technical competence 10%, (b) methodological competence 40%, (c) system competence 30%, and (d) social competence 20%.

The course covers a presentation on open thesis topics at DIMA, as well as a presentation and discussion on the expectations and evaluation criteria of Bachelor's Theses, topic selection, structuring and writing a thesis proposal, including problem statement, solution approach, experimental design, evaluation, and implementation plan as well as project and time management over the course of a Bachelor's Thesis. Upon completion of their thesis, students will offer a presentation of their work (goal and research problem, solution methodology, evaluation and findings) and lessons learned with respect to the preparation and execution of their Bachelor's Thesis for the discussion with their peers. Additionally, participating students will attend scheduled presentations and benefit both from the peers' comments on their work and from the discussion of the work of fellow students.

In this course TIM Forschungs- und Abschlussarbeitsseminar you will have the opportunity to write your bachelor thesis as part of one of our research projects, with structured and systematic support from our academic staff. Supervision is provided as part of the seminar. Learn the basic rules and methods of scientific work. Acquire skills in systematic literature analysis. Benefit from feedback from your fellow students as part of success teams. The respective topic supervisors will provide topic-specific feedback on your outline and final presentation. If you wish to receive additional credit for the seminar (6 ECTS), you are required to attend all dates. This course is taught in English.

This course provides hands-on experience in developing smart contracts, the programmable backbone of Web3 that replaces centralized platforms with immutable, self-executing code. • The usual duration of the program is two to four semesters. The teaching programme and all examination procedures are structured so that students can complete the programme within the usual study duration.

Content and Learning Goals:

Students of the Micro-Credential “Sustainable Entrepreneurship” will learn the fundamental principles of entrepreneurship and different dimensions of sustainability. This includes all issues on operative, tactical and strategic levels relevant to founding new businesses, for intrapreneurial activities and for Research and Development (R&D) or New Product Development (NPD).

Graduates of the programme will be able to apply entrepreneurial thinking to developments and research in chemistry and related fields in order to recognize opportunities and to develop new business ideas in this field.

The practice-related aspects of the programme focus on innovation, management practices and the allocation of resources leading towards the creation and growth of environmentally, socially and ethically sensitive business models. This includes gaining expertise in management, decision making, legal provisions, accounting and developing the ability to prepare sensible solutions for technical or business challenges. In addition, team work is promoted.

Timetable and Course List:

Students can plan their study schedule individually and can start either in the summer term or in the winter term. It is suggested to start with the mandatory module Venture Campus or Treasure Hunting:

Venture Campus - From idea to business plan (12 ECTS)

The course Venture Campus takes a hands-on approach, as interdisciplinary student groups select one of the innovative ideas conceived during the Design Thinking phase and embark on a transformative journey. They will develop their chosen idea from scratch into a comprehensive Business Plan, honing their project management, financial, and strategic skills along the way. This module encourages students to apply their knowledge and expertise to create sustainable and inclusive construction solutions that are not only innovative but also viable in the market.

Prior to attending in-person classes, participants will have access to instructive video content that covers the theoretical foundations of each module. These videos serve as a preparatory resource, enabling students to familiarize themselves with essential concepts and principles at their own pace. During the scheduled in-person class hours, our focus shifts to interactive engagement. This time is dedicated to addressing questions, fostering discussions, and applying the acquired knowledge in practical scenarios.

Welcome to the colloquium of the Department of Urban Ecosystem Sciences at the Institute of Ecology at TU Berlin!

The colloquium offers space to present and discuss the freshest research, planned projects and student theses as well as proven concepts and frameworks.

The events take place regularly, approximately every two weeks, and are open to anyone interested in the topics. Details on topics, rooms (usually BH-N 812) and dates are communicated via this platform.

Students writing their thesis in our department are expected to pitch their work at the beginning of their journey, as well as give a final talk. Thank you for your contributions to the colloquium!
