Course Description

This course introduces students to the sociological study of visual culture, images, and visual methods. We examine how images produce, stabilize, and contest social meanings; how power operates visually; and how sociologists can analyze and produce visual data. Students will learn basic tools of visual analysis and reflect on ethical issues in visual research.
