This academic excursion to Florence is designed to provide students with an immersive exploration of the city’s transformation from the medieval period to the Renaissance. Over five days, participants will critically examine the architectural, artistic, and intellectual shifts that defined this era, with a focus on the interplay between tradition and innovation.

The itinerary includes visits to key sites such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello and Orsanmichele. An excursion to Arezzo, with a visit of the Basilica of San Francesco, with Piero della Francesca’s cycle of the History of the Holy Cross, will provide a wider context. Students will analyze the evolution of artistic techniques, patronage systems, and urban development through tours of the city center and its main religious and civic buildings - the Duomo, the Battistero, Orsanmichele, and the Basilica of Santa Croce. The trip will also feature a visit to the Carmine and Brancacci Chapels, where the frescoes of Masaccio exemplify the transition to Renaissance.

The students will actively participate by presenting on selected artworks and architectural elements, fostering a collaborative and analytical approach to the study of this transformative period. This excursion aims to provide a rigorous academic experience, enabling students to contextualize Florence’s role as a catalyst for artistic and cultural renewal in Europe.

The attendance to the introductury session, with distribution of topics for the presentations on-site, on 20th May is mandatory.

The excursion is limited to 18 participants.
