Description:

Green technologies are assumed to be key solutions in the fight against climate change. At the same time, their (anticipated) deployment raises significant questions about the sustainability and justice aspects of these changesFocusing too much on technical solutions often prevents us from addressing their underlying causes or changing societal structures. Conceptual reflections on multi-species and intergenerational justice and the technofix perspectives of these technologies, from both a societal and environmental view, are key to ensuring a just and sustainable future.

This interdisciplinary project seminar enables students to critically explore the expectations and promises of green technologies in the context of climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice. With different methods from Technology Assessment and Responsible Research and Innovation, participants will learn to critically engage in ethical evaluation of emerging technologies. In interdisciplinary groups, students work on projects regarding a selected emerging green technology and investigate plausible future scenarios, develop systems-thinking, and create recommendations for its responsible design. The project seminar is open to students from all disciplines who are interested in green technologies and their socio-techno-ecological dynamics. The development of skills for interdisciplinary reflection on technology is investigated together with the students using participatory research methods. The seminar provides insights into the role that green technologies play in shaping a sustainable society and what challenges are associated with them.
