This course focuses on the fundamentals of thermodynamics with applications in engineering. Students will learn to evaluate the properties of real substances such as steam and ideal gases. They will analyze processes in both closed and open systems applying the first and second laws of thermodynamics. They will be able to understand and describe thermodynamics cycles and processes.
The main learning outcomes are the ability to
1. Determine properties of real substances, such as steam and ideal gases from either tabular data or equations of state
2. Analyze processes involving ideal gases and real substances as working fluids in both closed systems and open systems or control volumes to determine process diagrams, apply the first law of thermodynamics to perform energy balances, and determine heat and work transfers
3. Analyze systems and control volumes through the application of the second law
4. Analyze thermodynamic cycles
