Partial differential equations (PDEs) are often used to formulate physical phenomena in mathematical models. This course gives an introduction to solving PDEs numerically. Depending on the type of PDE (elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic), a different numerical method is recommended.
In this course we first introduce finite volume schemes and discuss how to solve hyperbolic PDEs. In the second part we focus on finite element schemes and elliptic and parabolic model problems. Both parts will also include some basics about finite difference schemes.
In the lectures, we will focus on explaining and analyzing the numerical methods. We will also partially provide some background about the PDE that we consider. The homework problems will include practical problems, for which programming will be necessary.
