This module addresses the sustainable use of materials along the life cycle. Students learn about primary production, the application in e.g. low carbon technologies, recycling options, and challenges of significant materials such as plastics, steel, aluminum, copper, precious and specialty metals as well as Rare Earth Elements but also the nutrient phosphorous.

Tools like Material Flow Analysis (MFA), Criticality Assessment, and Recyclability Assessment in combination with modern methods of data sciences enable you to make informed decisions along the product life cycle from design, waste collection & sorting, to proper recycling and reintegration of secondary raw materials in our economy and thus reduce the environmental footprint of the materials used in our society.
