HS Climates of Waste: Toxicity, Health, and Justice in a Climate- Changing World
Di. 10-12 Uhr
Raum: H 7112, Anmeldung über ISIS
Beginn: 15.10.2024
The ubiquity of waste characterizes our contemporary age. Industrial processes, communication tools, means of transportation, patterns of consumption, and societal organizations writ large are bound to the productions of residuals, discards, surpluses. Waste impacts and defines both the human and more-than-human worlds, endangering ecological balances, impinging on planetary systems, and unearthing inequality. Indeed, with human-induced climate change and the triumph of global interdependence threatening more and more people’s lives and livelihoods, waste inequalities are likely set to exacerbate and expand in unprecedented and inescapable ways in the decades, even centuries, to come.
This course provides a historical context to understanding the different implications of waste in the context of climate change. We will work through historical case studies and critically examine the multifaceted origins of our waste-defined modernity. By doing so, this course explores the complex and shifting notions of “waste,” and the challenges and consequences of urban coexistence beyond established narratives.
