Processes of Racialization after WWII followed different trajectories in »two Germanies«. The course is divided into four blocks:

1) Concepts: We will discuss conceptually racisms, racialization and marginalization from different literatures.

2) Milestone events through a socio-historical perspective in two Germanies.

3) The GDR System: Through its political economy geared towards socialism, the GDR engineered a society oriented officially towards international solidarity on the surface. Beneath GDR's surface, a "Socialism of Difference“ was taking place. This third teaching block explores how the concepts, norms and practices of racialization and marginalization existed in the labour policies of ‚Vertragsarbeit‘. The transnational Contract Workers migrated to the GDR from Socialist ‚Brother States‘ many of the workers were from African, Latin American and Asian Nation, immediately after they had achieved independence from European colonial rule.

4) The FRG: The FRG by comparison to the GDR had its political economy geared towards free market capitalism. It engineered a society oriented officially towards integration on the surface. Beneath the surface, a racialized labour market was taking place. This fourth block explores in addition how the concepts, norms and practices of racialization and marginalization existed in the Arbeitsmigration policies of West Germany. Postunification racist violence, racist hate crimes and the institutional responses in East and West Germany in comparison will be explored in relation to the official termination of (large scale) work migration programmes. In this fourth block, we will pay attention to the critiques of racism across spheres of institutional policies or civil society responses.
