During the 19th and 20th century many cities across Europe changed in an unprecedented way: they became bigger than ever, their infrastructure such as the metro system came to symbolize modernity itself. At the same time, nationalism became a major factor on the political scene. The nationalist politics had noticeable impact on the urban fabric in different countries over the last two hundred years. From monuments to the national glory to the whole districts (re)developed in order to project national myths. The city-branding strategies of the last years are no strangers to nationalist motives either.

The course will focus on the question in what circumstances and in what ways did nationalism play a role in in urban development in Europe during the 19th and 20th century? Who were the actors who used national politics and national rhetoric and what were their motivations? Finally, the question of how this changed over time and depending on the city’s character will be considered.

The seminar will be conducted in English. Students are welcome to use either language when participating in the discussion and preparing their presentations.
