Europe and Its Others
Termin: Montag 12-14 Uhr; Raum: KAI 1315; Dozent: Dr. Marcus Funck

Europeans - or groups who claimed to represent "Europe" - have always defined themselves through the construction of internal / external "others". In this course we will examine various sometimes co-existing, sometimes competing imaginations and concepts of "Europeanness" from the Middle Ages to the present. Some of the key questions we might ask: what are the (changing) internal divisions among Europeans and the external demarcations towards non-Europeans? How does the construction of "Europeanness" relate to the deep European entanglement with non-European cultures? What are the continuities and discontinuities in the history of the construction of a collective "European Self"? How might alternative inclusive conceptions of Europeanness look like?

This course is taught in English and open to international students in particular.
