EU-China relations are at a low. There is much talk about „decoupling“ and „Cold War“ on the one hand, and the need for cooperation especially in matters like climate change on the other. In the first half of the course (blocks 1-2) we’ll look into the recent history of EU-China relations with focus on the most debated issues like BRI, 5G or investments. Students will be asked to work on related case studies to reveal some underlying problems. In the second half of the course (blocks 3-4) we’ll do text and image analysis from mainstream news media in Europe and China, to see what perceptions of the “other” are projected and how they are shaped. After an introduction into the methodology students will start independent work on textual samples, exchange their experiences, formulate their views. The course will not provide ready-made answers to most of the current problems, but tries to inspire different perspectives and give space for further, more comprehensive questions.
