In this seminar we will read Karen Neander’s recent book A Mark of the Mental: In Defense of Informational Teleosemantics. In this book Neander offers a solution to the problem of mental content, i.e., an account of how physical states of the brain can refer to or be about states of the environment. The problem of mental content is one of the fundamental philosophical question connected to the representational theory of mind and therefore to the foundations of modern cognitive science, which presupposes the representational theory of mind. Neander’s solution builds on informational, structural and teleosemantic accounts of mental content, and thus represents a synthesis of theories usually thought of as competing.
