In the Trash as Treasure PiV, students will analyze the distribution of production, labor, and transport costs in construction materials. They will develop financial and economic arguments for using locally sourced, unconventional, or alternative materials from urban mining and waste recovery. Following an introduction to economic and financial dynamics in construction and material pricing methods, students will first examine cost breakdowns, including carbon emissions, of conventional materials through a Benchmark from the BKI Database. Each group will assess a different component based on DIN 276 third level detail cost data. In the second phase, students will apply their findings to alternative materials developed in the studio, culminating in an argument on financial, economic, and ecological advantages or disadvantages. The PiV includes a mid-term presentation that is separate from the studio, but the final argument will be integrated into the final presentation and deliverable of the studio. A poster and brief report on methods and findings shall be submitted afterward.
