#61589 SRITAP B: SE Spatial research: topics, concepts and practical applications

Places and their past

Tuesday, 4-6 p.m., Room A 817 (Milan)

30 years ago, Doreen Massey published her essay ‘Places and their pasts’, a pioneering analysis of the relationship between places and their historical contexts. Places, according to Massey, should not be understood as static, but as dynamic products of social practices, historical processes and cultural narratives. Massey calls for the complexity and plurality of places to be recognised and explored instead of reducing them to a single narrative.

Precisely this is the aim of the seminar. The essay serves as a starting point from which single statements or hypotheses are drawn, which are then transformed into research designs. The implementation in small groups can for example involve spatial interventions or social experiments. The final goal is to create a diverse catalogue of empirical explorations of the theoretical basis of Doreen Massey's concept of place.

The seminar is the PArt B of the module Spatial Research in Theory and Practise and complements the winter semester's IV Research-oriented Project Work. Building on previously acquired knowledge, participants will learn the practical implementation of theory-led research approaches and the communication of research results in the form of short articles. The proposed interdisciplinary perspective of urban research and the impetus to critically analyse the own environment should enable participants to understand Berlin as a diverse and dynamic field of research.

Please note: The course starts on 22 April 2025.

Bachelorprojekt 2024/25

Konrekte Utopien
