This is a lecture series on the role that microorganisms play in the
environment and how they can be used in biotechnological applications.

We
look at different types of microorganisms and their function in
different ecosystems. We analyze the molecular drivers (genomes, genes,
proteins, pools of metabolic intermediates) contributing to the
microbial functions. We also describe the path from identifying
microbial processes in the environment to the full scale application.
Also methods in the functional annotation/characterization of genes and
the characterization of microbial populations are discussed.
