Berlin needs more and better schools and has recently launched an official programme to improve its infrastructure. Within the chair A13 we embrace the social, functional, technical, cultural and architectural challenges of the ‘Schulbauoffensive’ and look at different sites for schools in Berlin in a holistic way. In an integrated design studio for all students (Bachelor and Master) A13 we will focus on selected realistic sites and programmes in the varied urban context of Berlin. The studio addresses issues of the use and transformation of existing buildings of various kinds, characters and qualities. We will look at important international precedents and analyze their historic and cultural significance and meaning. We will study didactic strategies and the relationship between pedagogical philosophies and their materialization. We will look at the way buildings are used and the architectural means to stimulate their appropriation. We will explore the needs of present-day education and design a rich contemporary learning environment consisting of new and old elements, ideas and spaces.

Sustainable structures, spatial quality and the use of materials are closely related. Our aim is the design of well- crafted buildings with beautiful proportions, good daylight, tactile qualities and well-considered plans. The studio introduces you to the world of sustainable building structures, especially engineered timber. We discuss and practice various architectural applications of timber and focus on the significance of materials for the atmospheric and multisensory experience of space.

Berlin braucht mehr und bessere Schulen und hat kürzlich ein offizielles Programm zur Verbesserung seiner Infrastruktur gestartet. Innerhalb des Lehrstuhls A13 stellen wir uns den sozialen, funktionalen, technischen, kulturellen und architektonischen Herausforderungen der Schulbauoffensive und betrachten verschiedene Schulstandorte in Berlin ganzheitlich. In einem integrierten Designstudio für alle Studierenden (Ba- chelor und Master) A13 fokussieren wir uns auf ausgewählte realitätsnahe Orte und Studiengänge im vielfältigen urbanen Kontext Berlins. Das Studio beschäftigt sich mit Fragen der Nutzung und Umgestaltung bestehender Gebäude unterschiedlicher Art, Charakter und Qualität.
