Isotopes are widely applied in life sciences and have gained key importance in many methodological approaches. The module gives an overview on the analytics of radioactive and stable isotopes and their applications in different research fields, e.g. biogeochemistry, tracing chemical fate in the environment (in situ and OECD tests for REACH registration), microbial metabolism and degradation using ‘omics’ techniques (fluxomics, metabolomics, proteomics, genomics, transcriptomics), clinical drug development, medical treatment, and forensics (reconstructing the past, crime investigation, food fraud detection).

The module consists of a lecture series and exercises in small groups. Each student or group (depending on the number of students) will prepare a 15 min presentation for a given topic about the application of isotopes in biotechnology (list of the topics will be provided at the beginning of the course).

The course is given in English and is offered in the Wahlbereich Liste A.

Das Praktikum vermittelt grundsätzliche und spezielle anaerobe biochemische Arbeitsmethoden und gibt Einblicke in in aktuelle Themen der Umwelt- und Geobiotechnologie. Verschiedenste moderne Techniken und Geräte werden vorgeführt. Das Praktikum findet vom 28.02.-04.03.2022 am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung - UFZ in Leipzig statt. This course gives an overview on fundamental and specific aspects of anoxic biochemical methods and gives an insight into current topics in environmental biotechnology and geobiotechnology. We also demonstrate a range of modern techniques and devices. The practical course will be held 28.02.-04.03.2022 at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig.
