OVERVIEW

In the light of climate change, circular economy has become an increasingly popular notion among urban policy makers who are applying circularity principles to urban development. The Bauhütte 4.0 Wood to City value chain forms a new circular urban infrastructure that can contribute to the decarbonisation of Brandenburg/Berlin's regional urban growth. This seminar will uncover the new geography of this and other supply chains to find out where and how the functions of production, distribution and consumption are territorialised. Students will be invited to describe these geographies in a historical and socio-spatial context through maps, infographics and storylines.

BÜRGER:INNEN FORUM - URBANER HOLZBAU

OVERVIEW

The goal of the seminar is to initiate a public Bürger:Innenforum Urbaner Holzbau to support the planning process of the Bauhütte 4.0 Wood to City. City making is always a result of complex processes between different actors, politics and discourses. Urban transformation processes such as the planning of bio-based low-cost housing hold the potential for many conflicts. Students will be invited to research potential conflicts, different participatory practices from analogue scenario games to digital platforms supporting the negotiation of complex urban management processes and to join the forum creation process.

OVERVIEW

A factory based on agile and ambidextrous Industry 4.0 methods is situated at the heart of the Bauhütte 4.0 project. Intelligent prefabrication processes will help to produce building components for the low-cost housing units in the Schumacher District and for other sites designated for housing development in the Berlin StEP, or City Development Plan. In cooperation with Fraunhofer IPK and Fak V of the TU B students are invited to develop concepts for this factory and potentially develop interactive dashboards and gasified models of the cooperation between industrial process chains and design work of architects.

In cooperation with Hendrik Lehmann from Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab, students are invited to join a project on how the story of the Bauhütte 4.0 - Wood to City project can be told through visual storytelling, through the development of data narratives, and by applying the best present interactive media applications. Students will learn how to present visual material online and translate the produced material into an online platform format. This process is a new way of making the studio*s design process publicly available and addresses the challenges of public representation posed by the COVID 19 pandemic.

OVERVIEW

The Bauhütte 4.0 is a project jointly initiated by Tegel Projekt, Fraunhofer IPK and the TU Berlin. It aims to develop a complete value chain Wood to City for the Brandenburg/Berlin region and will focus on the design and realisation of a bio-based construction and production centre in Berlin TXL - The Urban Tech Republic, as well as the development of the new Schumacher District, als planned in the space of the former Tegel Airport.

We invite students to develop innovative ideas for both the overall value chain Wood to City as well as for the wood construction design and production processes, and to test these in the context of the Bauhütte 4.0 planning process.
